A novel pretreatment of dried blood spot filter paper to improve the preservation of amino acids: a technology to increase access and care

Molecular Genetics and Metabolism, 2026

Amino acids are vital for many critical metabolic pathways and many disorders result in changes in amino acids. Many barriers exist restricting patient access to monitoring, especially for those in rural and low resource areas. Dried blood spots (DBS) do not require medical expertise to obtain but amino acids in a DBS are highly susceptible to heat and humidity. Thus, we sought to improve DBS amino acid stability. We showed that pretreatment significantly increased the consistency of sample recovery, precision, and accuracy, compared to untreated DBS. Lastly, we evaluated pretreatment in “out-of-the-laboratory” collected samples and show a significant improvement in recovery and stability of amino acids exposed to harsh environmental conditions for multiple days.

Kirkland Wilson, one of the founders of Stablyte, has partnered with the makers of the excellent genetics learning platform, EveryGene Metabolic, to develop a free to use biochemical genetics question bank for any and all interested learners.
The question bank is designed to help learners prepare for board exams and other assessments in the field of biochemical genetics. Stablyte believes that we need more biochemical geneticists and that the cost of study materials should not be a barrier to success.

Note: To access the free to use metabolic question bank, you must be on "EveryGene Metabolic" and not the general EveryGene website.
